Ministry Overview

The Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation (MEGJC) was established in February 2016.   The MEGJC has  responsibility for the formulation and implementation of policies relating to its portfolio areas which include Water and Wastewater, Land, Environment, Climate Change, Housing, Urban Renewal, Economic Policy and Investment, and Works.   Its portfolio areas are strategically aligned to  the Vision 2030 National Development Plan as stated in:-

  • National Goal # 3 – “Jamaica’s Economy is Prosperous” which pursues Economic Stability, Competitiveness and Employment, and  has as its national outcomes:
  1. An Enabling Business Environment  (#8)
  2. Strong Economic Infrastructure (#9)
  3. Priority Economic Projects /Internationally Competitive Industry Structures (#12) and
  • National Goal #4 which pursues Environmental Resilience and Climate Change Response and has as its national outcomes:
  1. Sustainable Management and Use of Environmental  and Use of Environmental and Natural Resources (#`13)
  2. Hazard Risk Reduction  and Adaptation to Climate Change (#14)
  3. Sustainable Urban and Rural Development (#15)

 

The Ministry is pursuing these Goals through a number of Strategic Objectives, which include:-

  • Improving the Enabling Environment through the Provision of  Appropriate Policies and Legislation.
  • Increasing the synergies, linkages and collaboration amongst sector institutions, with keen focus on Public/Private Partnerships.
  • Improving the environment for financing business, innovation and Green Growth.
  • Improving integrated development planning, incorporating spatial planning and management for efficient land use.
  • Increasing equitable, broad-based land ownership and protection of property rights, as well as greater accessibility to affordable shelter and housing.
  • Increasing the development of a modernized main road network and highway infrastructure.
  • Increasing the divestment of Non-Core Government functions and maximizing asset utilization.
  • Increasing Port and Logistics operations for economic growth.
  • Increasing access to potable water and sewerage services.

Provide visionary leadership, appropriate legislation, innovative policies and coordinated implementation which facilitate investments, sustained growth and prosperity for all in an environmentally sustainable manner.
